Dr. Xiaochun Zhu, partner of Scully Scott Murphy & Presser PC, is going to guide you through some fundamentals of intellectual property which include different types of intellectual property rights: trade secret, trademark, copyright, and patent, and basic elements for each of these rights. She will then discuss patent protection and the recent developments in U.S. patent law including some recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions.

Dr. Xiaochun Zhu
Partner, Scully Scott Murphy & Presser PC

Dr. Xiaochun Zhu is a patent attorney at the intellectual property boutique firm, Scully Scott Murphy & Presser, P.C. Dr. Xiaochun Zhu received her undergraduate study at Tsinghua University (major in Bioscience) and received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Brandeis University in 1996. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School from 1996-1997, and joined Scully Scott Murphy & Presser in 1997. She obtained her J. D., magna cum laude, from St. John's University School of Law in 2002, and was admitted to New York State Bar, and the Eastern and Southern Federal District Courts in New York. Dr. Zhu is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Dr. Zhu's technical expertise is in the areas of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. She practices in all aspects of patent procurement in the U.S. , and also performs in various aspects of the PCT practice, as well as assists in prosecution of patent applications outside of the U.S. Additionally, Dr. Zhu is experienced in legal opinion work, including patent validity and infringement opinions, and freedom-to-operate opinions, and counsels a range of clients from large corporations to start-up companies and universities, including companies from China. Dr. Zhu became the first woman partner of Scully Scott Murphy & Presser in January 2006, and was featured among New York Women Leaders in the Law in New York Magazine in 2008.

Dr. Zhenhua Mao, PhD in economics, is the Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of China Cheng Xin International Credit Rating Co. Ltd. (CCXI). In 1992, Dr. Mao founded CCXI in China. Under his leadership, the company has become a comprehensive enterprise focusing on investment banking, services, real estate and industrial investment, with a characteristic of credit services. He served as economic and policy consulting analyst for both the Hubei and Hainan provincial governments. From 1995 to 1998, Dr. Mao served as Vice Chairman of the Board and President of the Hong Kong Seapower Group. Meanwhile, he also involved in the creation of some famous domestic companies. Dr. Mao is the Vice Director of China Society of Private Economy Research and Executive Director of China Federation of Industrial Economics. He is also a visiting professor at Renmin University of China and Nankai University.

Lijie Zhu

Lijie Zhu is Managing Director of Dragon Gate Investment Partners, Executive Officer of CorpOnline™ and CorpStarter™, and Partner of BRICS Connect Inc. Ms. Zhu has more than 10 years’ experience in the financial and media industry in America, Europe and Asia. She was Vice Director of The Council of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Chief Financial Officer for a US listed Chinese company, a credit analyst for Rogge Global Partners in London, and a financial analyst for Aufhauser Securities in New York. She also worked as a business reporter for China Center Television (CCTV) and China News Service. Ms. Zhu is a frequently invited speaker for international conferences and universities. She graduated with a MBA and a MS degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and a BA degree in Journalism and a Law Degree from Lanzhou University in China. Lijie Zhu was honored as one of the 50 Outstanding Asian Americans in Business 2011 by the Asian American Business Development Center (AABDC).
